MnDOT unveils proposed changes for University Ave. Northeast in Minneapolis
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation today announced proposed improvements for University Ave. N.E. (Highway 47) from Central Ave. S.E. to 27th Ave. N.E. in Minneapolis.
The changes were developed based on recent studies, such as the Highway 47/65 Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study. The PEL study has demonstrated key challenges, including speeding being a safety issue and existing sidewalks being narrow and close to moving traffic. To address these issues, MnDOT is now recommending changes, including narrowing University Ave. N.E. from four lanes to three lanes and adding medians along the road to improve safety, among other improvements.
MnDOT invites the public to learn more about the proposed improvements and provide input. An online survey is available through June 30. MnDOT will also host a public meeting for people to learn more and share feedback on June 11, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., at Las Estrellas Dual Language Elementary School.
The goal for this phase of the project is to create one proposed design layout for this stretch of University Ave. N.E. this year. Once developed, MnDOT and local partners will seek funding to make road improvements. This project is currently planned for 2027.
