Highway 60 closed, detoured at Wabasha because of flooded road
WABASHA, Minn. – Highway 60 east of Highway 61 in Wabasha is closed and detoured because of water over the road, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The stretch of Highway 60, which goes under a railroad bridge, is just east of Highway 61 at Wabasha. Water from the Mississippi River backs up and floods the low-lying area, including the road. MnDOT is blocking the road with barricades because of rising water levels. A detour is marked and directs traffic around the closed area. This area often floods when the Mississippi River rises significantly during spring and heavy, sustained rains.
MnDOT cautions motorists to be alert for the potential of roadway flooding in the region. Other highways could be closed at times if water poses a safety hazard to motorists.
The Highway 60 barricades and detour will be removed after water levels recede and the road is inspected for safety. MnDOT will announce the reopening of Hwy 60.
MnDOT cautions motorists:
- Expect the unexpected – flash floods can occur anytime, anywhere.
- Do not drive around barricades or into flooded areas.
- Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. A foot of water will float many vehicles. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles and pick-ups.
- When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. If travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will also apply.
