Verify account information

The end of the year is a great time to take stock of your account details and make updates. Please verify all data on your Minnesota E-ZPass account including:

  • Customer name,
  • Billing address,
  • Contact phone number(s),
  • Email address,
  • Credit card and expiration date, and
  • Vehicle license plate information.

Assuring this information is up to date will assist Minnesota E-ZPass in providing the best possible service.

Use the Minnesota E-ZPass tag outside of Minnesota

A trip out-of-state, or a change in your driving pattern, may impact your E-ZPass account. If you are traveling for the holidays, we recommend making a larger one-time payment or increasing your automatic replenishment and low balance threshold amounts before traveling to avoid your balance falling negative before the next replenishment cycle. You can make these changes online or by contacting customer service at 1-866-397-4334.

You need the switchable Minnesota E-ZPass tag to travel on E-ZPass lanes outside of Minnesota. MnPASS tags, either switchable or sticker, ONLY work in Minnesota. If you plan on using your E-ZPass account outside of Minnesota, you must swap your MnPASS tag for a Minnesota E-ZPass tag. There is no charge for swapping tags. NOTE: a new tag can take 24-48 hours to be “active” and ready to use on the E-ZPass network. If you need a new Minnesota E-ZPass tag, please plan accordingly.

Fraud activity continues throughout the nation with scam artists sending fake messages claiming you have an invoice or a bill from using Minnesota E-ZPass or another E-ZPass facility. Be aware and don’t get scammed!

Scam artists use sophisticated techniques, legitimate looking messages or URLs, and a sense of urgency hoping to trick people into clicking on a link or replying to a message. Phone numbers and email are chosen at random, and they are targeting everyone—not just E-ZPass users. Delete and don’t respond to anything that seems off or suspicious.

Sometimes scam artists send what looks like an official invoice in the mail. This could be a scam, too. Minnesota E-ZPass uses a designated and secure customer account system for payment. In Minnesota, you need a valid tag which reads and deducts the fee from your secure account when using an E-ZPass lane. Other states may send an invoice in the mail from video or camera tolling when you don’t have your E-ZPass tag. If you receive an invoice in the mail, confirm it is a legitimate bill. Don’t respond to anything that seems off or suspicious and always verify charges directly with the tolling agency.

If you have questions or concerns, check your account through the secure customer portal, or contact us directly. If you clicked on a link or provided information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.

Out-of-state tags (e.g. I-PASS)

If you already have an E-ZPass tag from another E-ZPass agency (for example I-PASS), please be sure to remove that tag from your vehicle if you are using one of our Minnesota tags (E-ZPass or MnPASS), or if you are carpooling and the tag doesn’t have the option to switch it into HOV mode. Other E-ZPass tags are always in fee-paying mode, and you will be charged. Not removing the tag from your vehicle may result in duplicate tolls or being charged when carpooling in Minnesota E-ZPass lanes.

Using your tag in a rental vehicle

Your E-ZPass tag can be used in rental vehicles. Your rental vehicle should be added to your E-ZPass account as an additional vehicle while in use to avoid any potential violations. Be sure to immediately remove the rental vehicle from your account when you turn it back in. You may be held responsible for tolls until the rental vehicle is removed from your account. Additionally, several states elect not to reverse these charges for customers when they occur.

Many rental vehicles are already equipped with tolling devices, be sure to work with your rental car company to deactivate their device and use your own E-ZPass tag.

E-ZPass Minnesota electric vehicle incentive

This program addresses a larger goal of trying to get more electric vehicles on the road in Minnesota by giving E-ZPass Minnesota credits to people who purchase or lease a new or used electric vehicle between November 1, 2019 and October 31, 2025. The E-ZPass Minnesota incentive encourages those who are thinking about purchasing or leasing a vehicle to choose an electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Note: you must have or open an E-ZPass Minnesota account including all minimum balances and fees, as applicable, to receive E-ZPass Minnesota credit. Only one electric vehicle incentive per person. E-ZPass Minnesota promotional credits can be used only on Minnesota E-ZPass lanes.

How it works

  • Purchase or lease a new or used battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle between November 1, 2019 and October 31, 2025. (Not valid for electric motorcycles. Motorcycles are always free on E-ZPass Minnesota lanes.)
  • Verify proof of purchase, proof of lease or title transfer with the E-ZPass Minnesota customer service center.
    • Note: Qualifying proof of purchase or lease can be submitted by email to customerservice@ezpassmn.net. You will be notified once it is approved.
  • Receive a one-time credit per person to pay toll charges for using E-ZPass Minnesota lanes.
  • Battery electric vehicles receive a one-time E-ZPass Minnesota credit of $250.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles receive a one-time E-ZPass Minnesota credit of $125.
  • E-ZPass Minnesota credits do not expire unless the account is closed. All other terms of agreement apply.
  • Credit is available one time only per person and only valid for the E-ZPass Minnesota system.
