Fraud alert: Scammers are pretending to be MnDOT or E-ZPass saying you have an E-ZPass invoice or bill. This is a scam! Do not reply and delete the message. This is not MnDOT or Minnesota E-ZPass.

Traveling with E-ZPass

A trip out-of-state, or a change in your driving pattern, may have an impact on your E-ZPass account. We recommend making a larger one-time payment or increasing your automatic replenishment and low balance threshold amounts before traveling to avoid your balance falling negative before the next replenishment cycle. E-ZPass Tags with balances at $0 or below may not work in other states for 24-48 hours. You can make these changes online or by contacting customer service at 1-866-397-4334.

Some E-ZPass agencies have a toll calculator to help estimate the cost of traveling. This estimation is customizable based on the roads you will drive on, your entry points, your exit points, and the number of axles on your vehicle. Minnesota does not use toll calculators because we use dynamic pricing in our lanes. You can find links to other E-ZPass websites on the E-ZPass Group website.

E-ZPass tag vs. MnPASS tag

Minnesota E-ZPass tag
Minnesota E-ZPass tag works in any state with E-ZPass

The switchable Minnesota E-ZPass tag allows you to travel outside of Minnesota on any participating E-ZPass facility and pay tolls from your Minnesota account.

The old MnPASS switchable and sticker tags continue to work, but only in Minnesota. There is no need to trade your old tag for a new E-ZPass tag unless you plan on traveling outside of Minnesota.

MnPASS switchable and sticker tags

MnPASS tags only work in Minnesota

If you do plan on traveling outside of Minnesota, contact customer service to trade your MnPASS tag for a new E-ZPass tag. Once the new tag is assigned to your account, it may take up to 48 hours for it to be active out-of-state; plan accordingly.

Fraud alert—don’t be scammed!

Text message scam example
Text message scam example

There is a variety of fraud activity including messages pretending to be MnDOT or E-ZPass saying you have an invoice or bill from using the Minnesota E-ZPass Express Lanes. This is a scam!

Scam artists send what might seem like an official email or text with an urgent message to “click” on a link or respond to the message in some way. Phone numbers and email are chosen at random. Don’t respond. You could be duped into giving away sensitive data, including personal identity or credit card information.

Account holders

Minnesota E-ZPass will never text or email you for personal or sensitive information. For your security, we do not accept credit card numbers by mail, email, chat, or voicemail. If you have questions or concerns regarding your account or a message you receive, check your account through the secure customer portal, or contact us directly.

Non-account holders

Be aware and don’t respond to anything that seems off or suspicious. Report fraud activity to the Federal Trade Commission or to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

I-494 Edina to Richfield project

A multi-year construction project on I-494 in Edina, Bloomington and Richfield includes adding new E-ZPass lanes. This multi-phase project brings other safety improvements along this busy Twin Cities interstate including a new ramp at the I-35W and I-494 interchange, new bridges at Portland Ave., Nicollet Ave., and 12th Ave., and the addition of a new pedestrian bridge at Chicago Ave.

To learn more, visit the I-494 Edina to Richfield project webpage where you can sign up for project email updates.

Out-of-state tags

If you already have an E-ZPass tag from another E-ZPass agency (for example I-PASS), please be sure to remove that tag from your vehicle if you are using one of our Minnesota tags (E-ZPass or MnPASS), or if you are carpooling and the tag doesn’t have the option to switch it into HOV mode. Other E-ZPass tags are always in fee-paying mode, and you will be charged. Not removing the tag from your vehicle may result in duplicate tolls or being charged when carpooling in Minnesota E-ZPass lanes.

Using your tag in a rental vehicle

Your E-ZPass tag can be used in rental vehicles. Your rental vehicle should be added to your E-ZPass account as an additional vehicle while in use to avoid any potential violations. Be sure to immediately remove the rental vehicle from your account when you turn it back in. You may be held responsible for tolls until the rental vehicle is removed from your account. Additionally, several states elect not to reverse these charges for customers when they occur.

Many rental vehicles are already equipped with tolling devices, be sure to work with your rental car company to deactivate their device and use your own E-ZPass tag.
