Hwy 61 lane closures near Winona begin Aug. 5 for bridge deck repairs

WINONA, Minn. — Highway 61 motorists east of Winona should be alert for Minnesota Department of Transportation crews making bridge deck repairs beginning the week of Aug. 5, according to MnDOT.

The repair work will cover two bridges with work taking place in one lane at a time. Work is scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 5 and wrap up later in August. The bridges are eastbound on Hwy 61:

  • East of Sugar Loaf View Road
  • East of Winona County Road 9 at Cedar Creek

Motorists may experience traffic congestion or slowdowns near the work zones at peak travel times departing Winona on Hwy 61. Warning signs will be in advance of the work and eastbound traffic will need to merge into one lane to travel through the work zone during the repair work and after as the new concrete gains strength before traffic can travel on it again.

Safety
Drivers traveling too fast and not paying attention are the main causes of work zone crashes. Follow these safe driving tips:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
  • Expect work zones to constantly change. Day to day you could experience lane shifts, closures, narrower lanes, moving workers and vehicles.

Stay connected, informed
