Sturgis Motorcycle Rally travelers will encounter I-90, I-35 construction in Minnesota

ALBERT LEA, Minn. – Motorists traveling in southern Minnesota on Interstate 90 and Interstate 35 to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota will encounter construction work zones, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The annual motorcycle event in Sturgis, S.D., from Aug. 2-11 attracts thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who ride or haul their motorcycles to the Black Hills of South Dakota with many traveling on I-35 and across I-90 to and from the event.

For more information about the I-90 projects east to west and the I-35 projects north to south, go to MnDOT's 511mn.org road conditions maps, project websites and other online information:

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.

Safety
Drivers traveling too fast and not paying attention are the main causes of work zone crashes. Follow these safe driving tips:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
  • Expect work zones to constantly change. Day to day you could experience lane shifts, closures, narrower lanes, moving workers and vehicles.

Stay connected, informed
