Wahkon community invited to learn about future Hwy 27 project on Aug. 20
BAXTER, Minn. –The Minnesota Department of Transportation invites the community to learn about plans to reconstruct and improve Highway 27 through Wahkon, Mille Lacs County, at a project open house on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
The open house will take place from 5–7 p.m. at the Wahkon City/Community Hall, 151 Second Street East in Wahkon. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the project, view design layouts, and provide feedback on proposed landscaping and street furniture within the boulevard. To better fit individual schedules, the event is drop-in style—guests may arrive and leave at their convenience.
The project is currently in the design phase and is scheduled for construction in 2026.
Work for the estimated $2.1 million project includes:
- Reconstruct the road surface
- Install curb and gutter and add underground storm sewer
- Add or update sidewalks and pedestrian approaches
- Add bike lanes along both sides of road
- Landscape and install aesthetics to enhance the downtown boulevard
When complete, travelers will benefit from a new, smoother road surface; updated stormwater drainage; enhanced downtown look and feel with city landscaping and aesthetics; and improved motorist and pedestrian safety.
