Traffic switch begins Aug. 21 on Hwy 61 in Red Wing at Withers Harbor Drive
RED WING, Minn. – Motorists traveling on the Highway 61 bridge at Withers Harbor in Red Wing will encounter traffic changes on Aug. 21 as construction starts on the median, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
On Wednesday, Aug. 21, crews will switch to one lane in each direction on separate bridges. Construction crews will be finishing the median work and the plaza underneath the bridge. If weather or equipment issues arise, this work will take place on Aug. 22.
The Hay Creek trail continues to be detoured because of construction. The detour is as follows:
- Bicycling from the south, at Featherstone Road you will be directed to Bench Street.
- Bicycling from the north, at Old West Main Street you will be directed to Bench Street.
Signs are posted to help direct cyclists on the trail.
Additionally, there will be paving work to the south of bridge occurring through mid-September, so traffic will remain in single lanes in each direction.
The two-year project is replacing the Hwy 61 bridge over Withers Harbor Dr. and Hay Creek in Red Wing. Crews are also reconstructing the approaches to the bridge from Bench St. to Withers Harbor Dr. and making other road improvements.
The $14 million project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
