Upcoming traffic impacts for Twin Ports Interchange project

DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation to close single lanes and conduct nighttime closures of I-35 next week as part of the Twin Ports Interchange project.

Monday, Aug. 19:

  • Southbound I-35 from 5th Avenue West to 27th Avenue West will close from 8 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. on Tuesday. A detour will follow 5th Avenue West, to Superior Street, to 27th Avenue West.
  • A right lane closure will occur on northbound I-35 from the Garfield Avenue overpass to the Mesaba Avenue exit from 8 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

Tuesday, Aug. 20:

  • A northbound I-35 right lane closure will be in place from 27th Avenue West to 19th Avenue West between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Northbound I-35 sign updates will occur on bridges at 40th Avenue West, 27th Avenue West, and the Highway 53 overpass, from 8 p.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Traffic will be detoured up and down exit/entrance ramps at each location. 
  • The ramp from westbound Highway 2 to northbound I-35 will be closed from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday. A detour will follow Southbound I-35, to Central Avenue, to Northbound I-35.

Wednesday, Aug. 21:

  • Southbound I-35 from 26th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West will close from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 5 a.m. on Thursday. A detour will follow London Road and Superior Street from 26th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West.  

Thursday, Aug. 22:

  • Southbound I-35 from 5th Avenue West to 27th Avenue West will close from 8 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23. A detour will follow 5th Avenue West then Superior Street to 27th Avenue West.

As a reminder, a full closure of the Blatnik Bridge will also occur from 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.  When the bridge reopens, bypass connections from I-535 to/from northbound and southbound I-35 will open. Motorists are asked to minimize distractions, watch for merging traffic, and use caution when navigating the new movements.
