Lane closures on Hwy 14 Stockton Hill begin Aug. 27 for repair work

WINONA, Minn. – Lane closures on eastbound Highway 14 on Stockton Hill begin Tuesday, Aug. 27 as maintenance crews prepare to make repairs for erosion prevention, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Short traffic delays are possible with the closure of the right eastbound lane/climbing lane, but vehicles traveling east toward Winona may use the left lane going uphill. The lane closure will be in place until the work is completed. Removal of the lane closures will be announced at a later date.

Westbound right lane closures are also planned but will be done at a later date in September.

Motorists will also see brief traffic stoppages on the west end of Stockton Hill at a future date when crews need to complete repair work where there are only two lanes. Flaggers will stop vehicles, so traffic can take turns in each direction. This will be announced closer to the date of those repairs.

MnDOT crews will be making repairs for erosion prevention in approximately 15 areas along the hill between Winona and Stockton. This work is in advance of a planned project in 2025 that will make drainage improvements.

Safety in work zones

Motorists should always be prepared to encounter traffic changes when approaching work zones including lane closures, lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, slow-moving heavy equipment and slow or stopped traffic. To keep everyone safe, drivers must:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at www.511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Do the zipper merge.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
