169 REDEFINE: traffic switches onto new surface, bridge in Elk River
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Those who navigate through the Hwy 169 work zone in Elk River will encounter some changes as traffic begins to switch Wednesday, Aug. 28, onto the new, smoother lanes and bridge that spans Main Street, reports the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Here’s what to expect at the Hwy 169 and Main Street interchange work site:
- Hwy 169 switches onto the new, smoother northbound side to construct the southbound side of the interchange.
- Hwy 169 remains one lane, each way, 24-7, between Highway 10 and School Street.
- Northbound Hwy 169 on/off ramps open to the new Main Street intersection, east of the bridge, at Zane Street/Line Avenue/181st Avenue.
- Main Street remains closed to all travelers at the bridge west to Carson Avenue, includes beneath the Highway 169 bridge. Pedestrians may cross at School Street.
After the traffic switch is complete overnight Aug. 28–29, work will begin in full force on the southbound lanes of Hwy 169 and the west side of Main Street.
When all lanes open in early November 2024, the project will improve traffic flow, increase capacity and reduce bottle necks, and improve motorist and pedestrian safety along three miles of Hwy 169 in Elk River.
In 2025, crews will return to complete any final tasks—permanent road markings, seeding, etc.
