MnDOT’s Metro District Planning, Program Management and Transit Office is where we put state transportation policy into practice! You will help with aspects of multimodal planning, long-range planning, and capital investment – project development, corridor studies and investment analysis in the Twin Cities Region—including research, technical analyses, modal data collection, and community engagement. You’ll work closely with experienced transportation planners and learn about internal agency structure and how MnDOT nurtures partnerships internal agency offices and with cities, counties, businesses and organizations. You’ll be asked to produce a variety of materials to support this planning, including maps, data visualization, presentations and documents.

The MnDOT Office of Sustainability and Public Health (OSPH) Planning Intern will work on diverse projects that will build experience in planning areas such as data analysis, GIS, policy research, public engagement, evaluation, stakeholder consultation and federal grant implementation. Intern projects may support equity impacts analysis, complete streets implementation, strategic partnerships, electrification of transportation, or resilience of the transportation system. The OSPH intern is a critical member of a fun and fast-moving team expanding sustainability and public health in transportation and supporting federal programs for reducing carbon pollution and improving public health.

The Active Transportation (AT) Planning Intern at MnDOT will work alongside a team of dedicated professionals who support walking and bicycling statewide. The selected intern can expect to assist with public engagement for the Statewide Bicycle+ System Plan update, contribute to GIS mapping activities, support Active Transportation and Safe Routes to School program implementation, and participate in data analysis and collection activities. The AT Planning Intern will join a passionate, innovative, and industry-leading team to help make walking and bicycling an easy, safe, and desirable option for traveling throughout Minnesota.

The purpose of this internship is to support the development of Minnesota's statewide transit plan, aimed at enhancing transit accessibility, efficiency, and equity across the state. The intern will work closely with the Transit Planner and team members within MnDOT’s Office of Transit and Active Transportation to support data collection and analysis, GIS mapping as well as to assist in stakeholder engagement efforts. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to assist with other transit activities in the office, including active transportation initiatives, research projects, and other transit-related projects. They may contribute to presentations and reports for various transit programs, assist in the coordination of public involvement events, and provide general support in developing materials and conducting analyses that inform statewide transit and active transportation policy. This role offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of transit planning while contributing to MnDOT’s vision of accessible, sustainable transportation solutions for Minnesota communities.

The intern in MnDOT’s Office of Transportation System Management (OTSM) will work on statewide policy and planning, and how MnDOT’s statewide planning is being implemented across Minnesota. The internship is a great place for a candidate interested in how policy and investment decisions are made for Minnesota’s multimodal transportation system. Work will include mapping, data analysis, research, writing, stakeholder engagement, and more. The Intern will support four teams:

  • Corridor Planning
  • Investment Planning
  • Policy Planning
  • Performance Risk and Investment Analysis.

Topics are wide-ranging, including transportation equity, developing corridor planning guidance, and implementing MnDOT’s investment plan. As a result, the OTSM intern will have the opportunity to align their work tasks with their skills and interests.

Planning at MnDOT

Our planning responsibilities consist of a range of activities. These include writing plans, conducting public and stakeholder outreach, data analysis, setting and managing the program to performance outcomes, and forming the capital investment program.

Logistics

The MnDOT Planning Internship Program runs from May through August. This internship is available for up to a 12-week, full-time appointment with flexible start date and schedule. The positions pay between $23.98 to $34.69 per hour.

Eligibility

Minimum qualifications for the MnDOT internship program are described below. Desired qualifications are listed for each position description.

  • A master’s or bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, urban studies, sociology, political science, or a closely related field (candidates who will obtain a Bachelor's degree by the position start date are also eligible.) or one year of professional transportation planning experience.
  • Eligible to work in the United States
