Pavement marking typical detail sheets

Pavement Marking Plans for MnDOT projects follow a general style and format. The typical details listed on this page represent the recommended pavement marking design; they may be added to the blank plan sheet border (see below) when assembling a Pavement Marking Plan for a particular project. Reference files are available in PDF and DGN formats to be imported into any pavement marking plan.

  • The Pavement Marking Typical Sample Plan below may be used as reference for designing a Pavement Marking Plan for a MnDOT project, although each MnDOT District may have slightly different formats developed.
  • When making modifications to these details, designers should review the MNMUTCD and Chapter 7 of the TEM.
  • If a typical detail is edited to comply with project specific construction situations, a revision date should be noted in the space provided on the detail.
  • DESIGNER NOTES are included on most typical details. The designer should use them to make appropriate design considerations. When the final pavement marking plan sheets are placed into the construction plans, all variables should be determined and entered directly on the sheet(s), and all designer notes shall be removed from the sheets.

Downloadable files

PLEASE NOTE: The CADD files were created in Microstation Version 7 format; levels, colors and some legend symbols may not be up to current CADD standards. These details will be updated on a continuous basis. It is recommended that a designer retrieves the most current version of any detail before beginning the "Pavement Marking Plan" design process.

  • Files available in Microstation format (DGN) or Adobe Reader format (PDF)
  • To remove DESIGNER NOTES in the DGN files, turn off the CAPT BLK level
  • The latest sheet revision date (MM.DD.YY) is shown
  • Please report any errors or suggested changes to the Pavement Marking Engineer at traffic.dot@state.mn.us
