MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Summary

A quick reference guide to commonly used standard sign codes, their sizes, and usage for different roadway classifications.

The Standard Sign and Marking Summary Update (PDF) is an ongoing list of changes to the MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Summary.

We are preparing an updated version of the MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Summary for release in 2026 to incorporate the sign design changes introduced in the MN MUTCD, 11th Edition. These updates are being developed in parallel with the phased releases of the FHWA Standard Highway Signs publication and revisions to the MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Manual.

Please note: The MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Summary, revised in Sept. 2025, does not currently reflect the sign design changes found in the MN MUTCD, 11th Edition.

MnDOT Designated Roadway Sign Summary

The MnDOT Designated Roadway Sign Summary is a reference guide of all the designated MnDOT roads categorized by scenic byways, trail and miscellaneous routes and memorial signs.

MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Manual

The MnDOT Standard Signs and Markings Manual (SSMM) is a supplement to the FHWA Standard Highway Signs (SHS) Publication. The MnDOT manual includes sign and marking designs that are not found in the SHS publication, such as Minnesota-specific signs and modifications of federal designs. It also includes punching codes for signs mounted on MnDOT sign structures.

We are updating the MnDOT SSMM to incorporate the sign design changes introduced in the MN MUTCD, 11th Edition. Updated sign designs will be released in phases. Sections of the manual under the heading with Needs revision to follow MN MUTCD, 11th Edition should be used with caution, as they may not yet reflect sign designs that comply with the MN MUTCD, 11th Edition. Until the updated manual sections are released, Minnesota sign designs should be verified between the signing plan and the MnDOT SSMM to ensure matching legends and dimensions before production.
