Bridge 3589
History and significance
Bridge 3589, built in 1924, overlooks Lake Superior on the east and carries State Highway 61 over the Stewart River north of Two Harbors in Lake County. The single-span structure consists of side-by-side, filled-spandrel, reinforced-concrete, arch barrels with Classical Revival architectural detailing. Although the bridge was widened in 1939, the work was compatible with the original architectural details. State Highway 61 was historically known as State Highway 1. It was one of the longest and most heavily traveled trunk highways in the state, spanning from Iowa to Canada, and a crucial conduit for the state's economic life, equally serving southern Minnesota farmers, Twin Cities manufacturers, and Lake Superior resort owners. Bridge 3589 is significant for its Classical Revival architectural design and its association with the state highway system.
