Walking

Walking in Minnesota

Walking is a key part in how people move around, whether out walking the dog, going to school, catching the bus, or traveling through the parking lot.

Walking plays an essential part in Minnesota’s transportation system and is an important contributor to the health of our communities. Wherever people are going, and whether or not their using wheelchairs, strollers, or other devices, Minnesotans want and need safe places to walk.

Planning and research

The Minnesota Department of Transportation oversees a statewide transportation system, which also includes people who walk and roll.

Design and engineering

Pedestrian facilities in roadway projects are supported by Federal Legislation, Minnesota State Statutes and MnDOT policy and practice. MnDOT translates Federal and State laws for accommodating people walking and bicycling into policies and practices.

Grants and funding

Funding opportunities for walking and bicycling-related activities.

Safety education

We all must take responsibility to follow the law, pay attention and share the road. Follow the law and these safety guidelines to keep everyone safe.
